United States: The American College of Cardiology is reported to have this concern as the latest study has postulated the possibility of a 19 percent higher chance of developing heart failure issues in the population than the general population who do not.
More about the study
Researchers utilized data from more than 175,000 patients collected from an ongoing study by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), including surveys and health records from electronic databases, to see if any people diagnosed with heart failure used e-cigarettes.
The outcome suggests that there were over 3,200 patients who had heart failure during a median containment period of 45 months, according to the report.
Dr. Nicole Saphier, speaking to “Fox & Friends Weekend,” said, “Let’s be honest here. It’s great news because sometimes we need to point to these studies to really hone this in on people,” on Sunday.
Dr. Saphier described, “On one hand, it [vaping] is a little bit better [than traditional cigarettes]. However, let’s think about what vaping is. It still has the nicotine. We know nicotine has direct effects on our blood vessels. When you decrease the elasticity of your blood vessels, that puts more stress on your heart. So, it’s not surprising that if you are still consuming nicotine, it will affect your heart. But on top of that, you’re also vaping new chemicals. You’re creating chemicals that are now going into your lung,” as Fox News reported.
“Popcorn lung” disease linked with e-cigarettes
According to Dr. Saphier, in the past years, the so-called e-cigarettes were seen to be a healthier choice in comparison to conventionally consumed cigarettes.
However, recent studies show that electronic cigarettes are connected to a condition known as “popcorn lung,” in which the damage of the air sacs in the lungs can be found.
She said, “I certainly don’t recommend it for everyone. Maybe it’s a good stepping stone to get off traditional cigarettes, but for long-term, absolutely not. It is detrimental,” as Fox News reported.
Marketing of vaping targeted younger audience
Marketing campaigns in past years for vaping have featured language that appeals to younger audiences. The message has been one of attracting product by touting flavours such as fresh cotton candy, sweet marshmallows, and bubble gum, as direct as the long running ads of the past.
Additionally, the past few years have witnessed campaigns for traditional cigarettes decline to a standstill due to the recently reported side effects.
Dr. Saphier said, “A lot of marketing efforts campaigned for it… It’s like they want our youth to be damaged,” and, “We’re really trying to restrict some of the advertising. I mean, at the end of the day, people have to know the truth about the dangers of vaping.”
