United States: Each year, about 20 million hernia surgeries are done around the world, making it a very common medical procedure. New research from Australia shows that gender plays a role in hernia risk.’
Inguinal Hernias Most Common in Men
Between the years 2017 and 2021, nearly half of the almost or can say near about 436,000 hernia surgeries in Australia were for inguinal (groin) hernias, with men making up almost ninety percent of those cases. The study found that men are more than seven times more likely to have a hernia than women.
As reported by Health-Day, Inguinal hernias were the most common type of hernia seen in the study.
Why there are men who are susceptible?
Researchers say the gender difference is actually due to the higher rates of smoking heavy exercise, bladder issues, long term airway disorders and hypertension and also disease related to heart.
Dr. Marianne Gillam from the University of South said in a news release that doctors of the nation should know that those patients who have really higher risk of hernia repair so that we can develop the health campaigns and the policies to improve their quality of life and also lowers the other risks of developing hernias and the study co-author.
Understanding Hernias and Risk Factors
This hernia occurs when one of your organs pushes through the muscle to the tissue that contains it and this can trigger discomfort and the abdominal pain and also in the very serious cases can strangulate the bowel which basically requires emergency surgery.
In the study the team has already turned to the data from the Australian institute that is of health and welfare to the crunch the numbers for five different types of hernia operations identifying what age groups and the other genders were at the highest risks.
Men at Higher Risk for Inguinal Hernias
However, the males had a far higher incidence of inguinal hernias as compared to females with the lifetime risks of almost 27 percent and 3 percent respectively.
While these folks between the ages of 60 and 64 and particularly men that age group were at the most risk overall for any king of hernia surgery women were more prone to the repairs of femoral hernias operation which is performed in between the sternum and the belly button.
