United States: Many individuals who were hospitalized due COVID-19 stay with a large number of symptoms months after the initial infection. However, arranged by NDORMS in the current market research, post-acute infection syndrome, that is, PAIS, is not limited to COVID-19 and is still caused by other respiratory infection.
The findings are published in JAMA Network Open and demonstrate long-term consequences of severe respiratory infections for patients’ health.
As reported by Medicalxpress, the research, led by Dr. Junqing Xie from NDORMS, looked at data from 190,000 participants from the UK Biobank, categorizing them into three groups: COVID-19 patients, patients admitted with other LRTIs and a control group of patients who have never been hospitalized for LRTIs. Patients filled in questionnaires regarding 45 different aspects of physical and psychological signs.
“What our study reveals is that there are post-acute symptoms following COVID-19 which are in fact common after severe respiratory illness,” elaborated Junqing.
“The identified patient population experiencing COVID-19 had increased prevalence of 23 symptoms of 45 documented symptoms of COVID-associated disease in various systems compared to patients with other non-COVID LRTIs leading to hospitalisation, showing increased prevalence of 18 out of 45 symptoms among these patients.”
In earlier contextual data, it was found that COVID-19 patients may suffer from ageusia or severe fatigue after the outbreak, some of which are neurological or cognitive From this study, one of the main issues is that there are. For example, abnormalities in thinking and communication are higher not only than in the reference group, but also than in other patients admitted for other LRTIs.
This conversation remains particularly important as healthcare systems around the world are still experiencing the ramifications of COVID-19, added Junqing. ‘Additionally through differentiating or identifying likeness of PAIS due to different virus we can strategise effectively on how to prevent such and care for these patients’.
